President's Report for 2011 to 2012 Annual Meeting

President’s Report for 2011

2011 started off with the disappointing realization that having elected councils the previous fall which should have stopped the incinerator, we had in fact elected a number of turncoats and we were no farther ahead.

Activities/Accomplishments

  • In order to educate new councillors (and old) about incineration, we organized an "Incinerator School" for councillors on Mar 23 at Ajax Town Hall - attended by 7 Regional councillors and 5 local councillors
  • manned information booths at various events in downtown Bowmanville throughout the spring, summer & fall
  • conducted survey at several plazas around Clarington re attitudes to incinerator
  • organized, along with others, a successful demonstration at the official groundbreaking at the incinerator site, Aug 17 - excellent press coverage including (indirectly) Macleans
  • purchased full colour DurhamCLEAR banners for use at events
  • Public Meeting - Monday Sept. 26 Faith United Church
  • participated in EFW Advisory Committee as mandated by the Terms of Approval of the Incinerator EA

Legal Action

·         main focus for 2011 was the decision to launch a legal action and the associated need to ramp up fundraising

  • formally launched mid July
  • first hearing date on peripheral motions – Nov. 30
  • decisions on those motions on Dec. 15 - mixed
