Outreach
In the current political environment he influence of any environmental group, depends substantially on its pocket book and its ability to put its money where its mouth is.
More and more, environmental groups are turning to the courts in the increasingly common scenario that governments do not carry through on their obligations to protect the environment.
DurhamCLEAR is one such group. When Durham Region decided to build a waste incinerator in Courtice, we and other groups spent thousands of hours researching and arguing and protesting to both the local and provincial governments that it would be damaging to the environment and to the lon term health of Ontario residents. To no avail! Te Region even ignored its own planning rules and, knowing that, attempted to circumvent those rules with a private agreement (Host Community Agreement) with the former council of Clarington.
When all else failed, DurhamCLEAR filed an application with the Ontario Superior Court to require Durham Region to respect the zoning bylaw which currently prohibits an incineration facility on the site.
This is expensive but provides the best hope of stopping the incinerator. DurhamCLEAR has several fundraising initiatives underway to raise this money.
